The Australian Labradoodle is instantly recognizable by its big round eyes and friendly expression.
Australian Labradoodles are intelligent, sociable, comical, fun and full of energy. They are very friendly dogs that are always eager to interact with people, which make them easy to train. The wonderful temperament of an Australian Labradoodle is something you just have to experience for yourself. As the name suggests they are a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. Australian Labradoodles were first bred as companions for people who suffer from allergies. They also come from a number of other parent breeds, including the Irish Water Spaniel, Curly Coated Retriever, American Cocker Spaniel and English Cocker Spaniel, which give them an even greater range of abilities and colours.

 

In the mid-1970s, a visually-impaired lady in Hawaii was looking for a guide dog to live with her and her husband, who was allergic to dogs.
Wally Conren, a member of a guide dog association in Melbourne, heard about her predicament and wanted to help. In an effort to create an allergy-friendly breed, he came up with the idea of crossbreeding a Labrador Retriever, a breed known for its intelligence and ease of training, with a Standard Poodle, a breed that doesn't shed much hair.
The first round of crossbreeding produced three dogs. Conren sent samples of their hair to the couple in Hawaii and found that his predictions had been spot on. The hair from one of the dogs produced no allergic reaction whatsoever. The dog in question was trained as a guide dog and sent over to Hawaii to live with them.

As the genetic technology to identify exactly what made the Australian Labradoodle allergy-friendly wasn't available then, it was an ongoing process of trial and error. More and more breeders became interested in the Australian Labradoodle and set out a deliberate plan to improve the breed based on a clear understanding of its characteristics.
The end result was the Australian Labradoodle known today and we all love.
